Steps on Green Card Renewal

Posted on January 28, 2013. Filed under: Immigration |

As a proof of U.S. resident status, an individual is granted a permanent resident card, universally known as “Green Card” but having a card does not guarantee a lifetime status in America. It is important to renew it like any government ID’S such as driver license 6 months before it expiration by filing a USCIS Form I-90 through online or by mail.  Normally, it can be renewed every 10 years because it has 10 year validity.  Things to remember before the expiration of resident card are the following:

  1. Start the renewal process a year or 6 months before the expiration of your green card.

Often, it is very unpredictable to determine how well-timed the duration of the renewal processes. Sometimes, it takes months, a year or more but most importantly it is best to keep in mind that the green card renewal process has been streamlined therefore, it’s safer and a good idea not to believe and presumed on something.

    2. Obtain and Fill out the USCIS Form I-90

Before, filling out the form the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) required the filers or e-filers to read carefully the instructions beforehand and it is a must to fill out the form completely.
After you’re done filling out the form, the Application Form I-90 to Replace Permanent Resident Card can be filed either via online or by email.

    3. Instruction and a Confirmation receipt.

If you file your application at the USIC.gov site they will provide you an instructions and a confirmation receipt. Sometimes you will receive the notification of receipt via email or as a letter. Keep it in a safe place as a proof that you have filed to replace your card.

    4. Do not miss your biometrics and Fingerprint appointment

Once the USCIS received your application for renewal, they will send you a notice of biometrics appointment. Make sure to bring your valid identification such as government issued ID’s i.e. driver’s license or a passport and your biometrics appointment notice.
