The permanent resident card which is also known as a Green Card is given as an evidence, to prove his lawful right to live and work in the United States. It states that the holder is a lawful permanent resident of the US. This Green card expires every ten years where its date of expiration is printed on the front side of card. It is mandatory to renew the Green Card six months before the date of expiration. Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident card, must be filed to renew a Green Card. This form can be filed online and paper version of the form also can be used.
One you get a Green card, numerous questions may arise about the Green Card, about its validity, when you must renew it, how to renew it, what if it expires, what if it is lost of stolen, and so on. You must renew your Green card before it expires, and the renewal procedure differs if you outside the US or if you are a conditional Green Card holder.

If your Green card will expire in 6 months, when you are outside the US, you must file for renewal as soon as you return to the US. Expiration of Green Card
Though your Green card is said to expire, your permanent resident status will not expire. Green card which is the proof of your resident status only expires. Immigrants are required by the law to possess a valid Green Card at all times. Hence in order to be able to establish yourself as a lawful permanent resident in the US, you must hold a Green Card which has not expired. This will allow you to work and stay in the US legally. In order to be in compliance with the US immigration laws, you are required to renew your Green card and you must not let it expire. You will face much difficulty in travel and in obtaining the benefits if your expires. Hence, you must file an application with the USCIS, to renew your green card before six months from the date of its expiration. Old Green cards do not have expiration dates. If you had were issued a Green card before you turned 14 years old then you must replace your Green card once you are 14 years old.
Expiration of a Conditional Green Card
A conditional Green Card cannot be renewed, so you cannot use the regular USCIS Form I-90 to renew your Conditional Green Card. You must file a form to remove conditions on your Green Card. If you were issued a conditional Green Card based on marriage with a US citizen then your must file Form I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence, jointly with your husband to remove conditions. If you had obtained your conditional Green Card through investment, then you can file Form I-829, Petition by Entrepreneur to Remove Conditions, in order to remove conditions on your Green Card. On the approval of your form, you will be issued a Green Card valid for 10 years.

You must file Form I-90, Application to Replace permanent Resident Card. The form must accompany the appropriate filing fee. Your photographs must be submitted at the time of your fingerprint appointment.
If you had lost your Green card and you apply for a replacement, then you must submit a photocopy of that card. If you do not have copies of the lost car, then you can submit copies of other identity documents such as passport, driver’s license or your birth certificate along with your application. A photocopy of the police record that you had filed when your card was lost must also accompany your application.
The time taken to process green card renewal application varies and it ranges from 6 to 12 months. You will get temporary documentation for your permanent resident status when your Green Card renewal is in process. You can use the temporary proof to establish your legal status until you get your Green Card. Once you file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, the USCIS will check your form for accuracy and completeness. Then your application ill be processed and then approved. After your application is approved, you will receive a 13 digit alphanumeric receipt number and you can check your application status online, using the 13 digit number.
